Words… They Can Make a Difference

Communicating is what we do each and every day of our lives.  We must do it to survive.  There are many ways to communicate…with hand gestures (both the good and not so good kind!), with body movements, with eye glances (or glares in some instances!), and with words.

Today we’ll focus on words…  Words are the vehicle that we use for verbal communication. They are our language, and our language is the software that runs our brains. The language we use can either support us in our life or limit us. speaking_into_ear_120x80

Words do matter. Words do help to create your life and create your goals. What phrases and sayings do you use? Are you even conscious of what you say? Let’s look at some common phrases and notice how they can affect your brain and ultimately your life.

One of the easiest examples to begin with is “I’m sick and tired of driving back and forth.” Now, if this driving back and forth relates to your job, how does your brain perceive these words?  The words “sick and tired” convey a message to your unconscious to feel a certain way. When arriving at work, would you rather feel “sick and tired”, or “awake and healthy”?

How about “I’d just die to have tickets to that game”? Does the phrase “I’d just die” convey to your brain a positive healthy request? Certainly not!  How about these? Are they in your vocabulary?
“This job is killing me.”
“I’m sure I’ll get it.  It runs in my family.”
“I feel ill every time I hear that.”
“My stomach is all knotted up.”
“I’m drowning with everything I have to do.”

Now, let’s look at some less obvious phrases. What about “There’s no way I could ever do that.” This statement stops any forward momentum. What a way to limit yourself!! Changing this phrase to “What would have to happen in order for me to do that?”, keeps the brain moving forward. It leaves the possibility open that it could happen.

And the grand finale that really hit home for me, “I really want to quit work.” The phrase sounds so harmless. I heard this over and over, year after year after year, from a friend. Eventually he left his job. He’d gotten what he’d continually repeated over and over to himself and others. He was now staying home… although staying home meant taking care of himself .  He’d developed a serious debilitating illness, which meant he HAD to quit work. His language came true to life, he just never in a million years expected it to turn out the way it did.

You get to be the programmer of your Brain!  Be Conscious of what you Say…Your Words DO Make a Difference!  Stay tuned next time as we look at some Power Phrases!
